This is a more rock centred, and psychedelic album, but bears no resemblance to say, MGMT, which is psychedelic in a much more delibrate and traditional way. (And hey, I like their new album too!). The lyrics on “Surfing the Void“, are as deep as the original album, not as occult or mythological, but more mystic, and reflective. Lyrically “Myths of the near future” was very intense, and I’m glad this metaphysical weight remains. As a fan, I'm very happy with this offering. I think non-fans, might find more to their palette on this album also.
The track “surfing the void” brings out some of the noiser and punkier art-noise sound we are more familiar with, as well as those higher voices. The harmonic aspect in singing and music “Valley of the calm trees” is again somewhat familiar, with a rolling vocal melody. Although there is newness in both these track, especially on the musical level.
“Venusia” brings in some more traditional psychedelic elements. The chorus is quite catchy, I think. “Extra Astronomical“, starts with some lovely noise and guitars, and gets pretty dense in parts, with stripped back bits. “Flashover” offers me some of that noise explosion sound I love. That Klaxons messy epicness. Nice. “Cyperspeed” brings in some nice noisy sonic density, building up very intensely at the end of the album. Great track.
Overall I like it. Its different, definitely more of a musical journey. But while its more skilled musically, more rocky, more structured its still innovative, still has that depth of meaning and sonic density that made me a fan of the Klaxons in the first place. And the musical level in this album, instead offers a much deeper melodic journey and perhaps more prominant vocal work. No doubt, like the first , this one will grow on me even more over time.

I want exactly sure what to expect from the Klaxon’s newer offering, Surfing the Void. I was hoping for something different, yet still Klaxons. The first track, “Echoes” has already put my mind at ease. The guitaring is tighter, there is a little more form, its more instrument based, but its still essentially the innovative blend of singing and noise that twists and turns, with great lyrics, that I liked to begin with - just a little more musically driven.
