Health (12)

Cannabinoids are a neurosystem (a system in the brain), for modulating and regulating various adaptive states that naturally occur. Some of these states are things like noxic reactions, exercise, pain and pregnancy. They, as a class of compounds, naturally occurring, and synthetic, produce effects ranging from anti-nausea, analgesia to more prominent psycho-active features like euphoria, and sedation.
Many very commonly consumed items contain Cannabinoids. A woman’s breast milk contains oleamide, which is a hunger and sleep inducing Cannabinoid.
Eggs and milk, cheese, chocolate, red meat, and a large variety of common seeds, nuts, fruits and plants contain either Cannabinoids, or what are called “Cannabinoid-like”, which means they have slightly different but similar effects.
There are two Cannabinoid receptors known, and in this authors opinion, one or even two more, given the vast array of subjective effects. The CB1 receptor produces a high, the CB2 receptor is more related to medical and body effects. The exact mystery of the synergy and nature of cannabinoids is really unknown.
There is also FAAH inhibitors, which block the breakdown of anandamide (our bodies suspected to be most preferred Cannabinoid neuro-transmitter). Paracetamol and chocolate have these properties, which contribute to the effects of each.
Omega oils, such as fish oil, soy extract, are also Cannabinoid precursors.
Not only are these possessed of remarkable medical qualities like other Cannabinoid related substances, but a good intake helps boost the functions of the system, leading to slightly better pain tolerance and other benefits.
Cannabinoids are remarkable neuro-protective agents, with one of the most potent anti-oxidant effects known to man. This gives them a range of potential benefits above and beyond there normal brain function. (Rats without Cannabinoid receptors in their brain actually age 30% faster, and cancer inducing agents are 95% less cancerous when THC is co-administered)
While there is a lot of mystery still about these substances, and even their role in brain, and science has only really started studying them, there is clearly a lot of importance in this brain system.
In summary, Cannabinoids are vital, medically complex and useful, and very common. Cannabis is no-where near the only plant with Cannabinoid properties, and your supermarket and body is full of them. Now, think about this the next time you’re in the supermarket, buying food!
My experience with the Hydro E-Cigarette, and giving up Tobacco.
Written by Drael
It is day seven today, of my giving up, of ciggies. Last time during the first week I was virtually crawling up the walls.
This time I did some thing very different. I've tried nicobrevin (quinine based), patches, gum and inhalers.
But thanks to progress - this time I picked up a full nicotine Hydro e-cig starter pack and a pack of refills.
Now I am no expert on e-cigs, but I’ve picked a lot up in my research.
It came charged which they don’t always – that’s a huge plus if your going straight off the ciggies like I was and cant wait for a charge before a puff.
The action of triggering the vaping seems to be sucking with this model, which avoids having to mouth it too tight, like apparently you do some models, and it generates a decent hit of steam/vapour, which is visible.
Here’s someone doing some “smoke” tricks with a hydro brand one.
Plus two and three. All good on a number of counts there. The taste is really not bad. It’s probably more green tea than tobacco but I like it, its nice and similar enough to a real cig, and again apparently something that can be got horribly wrong in certain brands. So, not bad on the taste either.
The hit of vape is nearly as satisfying as real smoking. It’s pleasurable, just less “broad” than usual tobacco. I suspect I will much enjoy it, once I have re-adjusted to a slightly lower level hit thats just nicotine and not the other smaller dose complimentary alkaloids (which only make 10% of the content FYI). It definately keeps you from going barking mad, and its actually nice!. Good with chocolate, or caffiene, and in the morning. I have had just 8 real ciggies for the time since I have stopped, and none in the last few days, just e-cigging. Getting into it.
It's kinda "cool" too. Lol. Like cigs were before the backlash.
At this stage, I am a little more active, but not bugging out. I think this option is will worth a look for smokers who struggle with quitting or the idea of it. It seems this will work out a fair bit cheaper of course too, I think maybe half as much for me money wise.
Two other notes that are important here – all e-cigs need charging. A charge pack, or two starter packs can be good if you want to be extra sure you’ll always have one charged to puff on properly.
The high nicotine ones are good for quitting smokers and withdrawals, but probably slightly high for my tastes in term of me wanting a longer pull rather than short hard hit. The balance of throat hit versus buzz versus draw etc, ie nicotine level, is a personal tuning thing moreso than with cigs. I'd still start with a high nico one, but adjusting to shorter puffs is a little annoying in this intermediate phase as a less than pack a day or non-camel smoker, when id rather have big easy draws...this probably partly because you can more deeply inhale steam with less difficulty...
Worth mentioning, this is more of a tarless, less harmful way of continuing to smoke than a quitting tool. You'll enjoy it a fair lot more than patches or gum, and a little less less than cigs.
I’ll be turning my smoker friends and family onto these for sure. Be interesting to check out some high end brand too, if we ever get any, although I am pretty darn happy with these ones. (And im extra curious about the stranger flavours overseas, like chocolate mudcake, and coca cola!)
Marijuana is a highly useful medicine. While research is emerging that marijuana may slow down and avoid risks of cancer, a fact acknowledged by the American Association for Cancer Research, may help prevent Alzheimer’s, and may even be capable of curing some cancers, at least when THC is injected or locally applied – marijuana has some very practical everyday medical uses.
It can be used for cramp pains – everything from PMS, to IBS to Crohns disease. As an anti-spasm medicine, it is also useful for seizures and MS. Doctors in California have found marijuana effective for migraines, where other treatments don’t work. Research even indicates marijuana can be used as a treatment for ADHD. There really can be no doubt, it’s amazing and unvalued medicine that is still delivering surprises.

The main downside with smoking pot, for medicine or otherwise, is that smoking things is harmful to your health/lungs. The otherwise safe chemicals in the plant get partly converted into harmful toxins.
Of course one should also make sure one is getting enough serotonin, and omega’s if one is regularly using medical cannabis, to ensure levels do not get depleted, as with regular use of any drug. 5-htp and fish oil is ideal. This should also help you maintain positive medical effects over time. Drink lots of water to avoid cottonmouth, as it can affect dental health to be too dry in the mouth.
Vaping
A Normal/maps study in California shows that vaporisation greatly reduces the levels of such toxins (virtually eliminating them). Here’s that study here
Using a vaporiser is not difficult to do, although they are a little pricey to buy. One can always rig something up oneself using a 75w light bulb if the cost is an issue.
You’ll just want very finely ground herb matter, and set the thing going so it can heat up before you start. This is important, the texture, use a grinder, either coffee or herb. Tune the temperature up reasonably high at first, even the point of combustion is cleaner than inhalation via a flame, but for proper vaporisation you’ll want to fiddle with the temperature setting – too high and your burning, too low and your not getting THC. The ideal temp for weed is 365 C or 185 F, thereabouts. Be patient, it’s not as quick as smoking – if you do it right, it should be better value for money than smoking, and still deliver the herbs nice taste.
Often the vaped herb matter has some residual activity, so perhaps can be used for cooking later.
Heres a list of temps for other plants.
The Oral Route

Similarly cooking is a clean way around any smoking toxins, and is very easy for anyone to do. You simply need something that absorbs fat-soluble things.
In this case the easiest bet is butter, but also milk, oil, vodka or anything similar will do. You merely heat the cannabis for a while, in the butter, oil, or milk – you will see that active white THC and fat precipitates (come out of the mixture) on the surface. It doesn’t take long, but you can see it happening. Then you just strain out the cannabis, and use the butter or oil for cooking as indicated in the recipe – or you can just straight drink, some warmed milk, perhaps with some honey and spices – in milk is a popular method for oral consumption in India, for a cannabis drink called “Bhang” (see below)
I see no point in pretending there are special "pot recipes". Anything that uses oil, or butter, can be used, just follow advice as above. I'd probably go for a microwave chocolate cake because they are easy. Here however is a Bhang recipe:
from Flavors Of India, by Shanta Nimbark Sacharoff
2 cups water
1 ounce marijuana (fresh leaves and flowers of a female plant preferred)
4 cups warm milk
2 tablespoons blanched and chopped almonds
1/8 teaspoon garam masala [a mixture of cloves, cinnamon, and cardamon]
1/4 teaspoon powdered ginger
1/2 to 1 teaspoon rosewater
1 cup sugar
Bring the water to a rapid boil and pour into a clean teapot. Remove any seeds or twigs from the marijuana, add it to the teapot and cover. Let this brew for about 7 minutes. Now strain the water and marijuana through a piece of muslin cloth, collect the water and save. Take the leaves and flowers and squeeze between your hands to extract any liquid that remains. Add this to the water. Place the leaves and flowers in a mortar and add 2 teaspoons warm milk. Slowly but firmly grind the milk and leaves together. Gather up the marijuana and squeeze out as much milk as you can. Repeat this process until you have used about 1/2 cup of milk (about 4 to 5 times). Collect all the milk that has been extracted and place in a bowl. By this time the marijuana will have turned into a pulpy mass. Add the chopped almonds and some more warm milk. Grind this in the mortar until a fine paste is formed. Squeeze this paste and collect the extract as before. Repeat a few more times until all that is left are some fibers and nut meal. Discard the residue. Combine all the liquids that have been collected, including the water the marijuana was brewed in. Add to this the garam masala, dried ginger and rosewater. Add the sugar and remaining milk. Chill, serve, and enjoy
PLEASE NOTE: Now here its worth noting that it’s harder to gauge dosage with oral consumption. Too large a dose can be pretty damn unpleasant, so be very cautious when trying out oral consumption methods!
Getting a good nights rest is essential to good mental and physical health. It’s also something that you sometimes miss out on if you use recreational drugs, or if you just have insomniac leanings. I myself struggle to sleep sometimes if I am stressed out. And there’s a lot of products and advice out there, so I thought I’d distil a no-nonsense guide to getting proper sleep, and supplementing for it.
Day & Night
There’s a lot to consider, environmentally for sleep. So, lets look at all of that before diet or supplements. The first main thing is your body clock AKA your circadian rhythm. Your circadian rhythm is a schedule of biological changes that occur in a cycle, trigger predominately by sunlight.
So, you will sleep better if your have a regular bed time and wake up time. This is because just before you normally go to bed, you get a release of melatonin, which makes you tired, and when you wake up you get a release of acetyl choline and serotonin, partly triggered by sunlight (Sunlight on the eyes, in the morning, can help you wake up properly). For this reason, it’s better not to sleep in if you sleep poorly, because it will throw this cycle out. Naps can also interfere, but a short mid afternoon nap, say for thirty minutes is better than sleeping in if you’re tired, and such power naps are shown to have no effect on the biological clock.

Legal pot alternatives – Getting maximum health, fun & safety out of them
Written by Drael
Now that legal smokes are legal, obviously good public education becomes important. There are some important things to note about using these products, some of which is relative to marijuana, some of which isn’t related. It's it's own thing as well as similar. Not a lot has been done via research on the synthetic cannibinoids, but initial studies seem to indicate that their is no effect on the organs, nor toxic metabolites, so it seems fairly safe to assume any and all health effects will rather be related the cannibinoid receptor action itself (i.e. the high), or the method of consumption (smoking) – though it doesn’t hurt being cautious in general.

Instant cigarette satisfaction in a hand gel? - Nicogel
Written by Neo
Nicogel NZ have started selling a 'new' product (which is actually widely used around the world already) here in New Zealand.
Nicogel is a "tobacco gel", applied to skin as a substitute for cigarette use. Nicogel is a tobacco product, and is not a smoking cessation product. Nicogel gives you the satisfaction from which many users crave, they curb the addiction and are perfect for long haul flights, the movies, the office or workplace, in fact anywhere that you can not smoke. Nicogel has all the components of tobacco but lacks many carcinogens that are formed as cigarettes burn.
Nicogel has now been on the market for 5 years and is available in many countries around the global. It represents a real alternative to tobacco without any of the damaging compounds typically found in tobacco smoke. Because it relies on absorption through the skin (which has been shown to be less than 1 minute by MRI scans), its safe amount of nicotine (typically 50 microgrammes per serve) is sufficient to deliver cigarette satisfaction as it avoids first pass metabolism.
Nicogel has been dermatalogically tested and shown to be suitable for use with sensitive skin. In addition, substantial testing has taken place to demonstrate, by HPLC, that Nicogel is nitrosamine-free, which is in keeping with its manufacture from only uncured tobacco.
Nicogel continues to remain a controversial product as it was the first, and to date the only, tobacco product to offer the smoker cigarette satisfaction without the smoke and its negative impact on health. Thus far any negative reviews of Nicogel have been driven by the tobacco industry or its lobbyists rather than bonafide consumers.
You must note, Nicogel does not claim to be a product that will help a smoker quit. It is a smokeless tobacco based 'cosmetic' product.

ince well before the advent of Viagra, people have been looking for ways to enhance their bedroom experiences. Many of these are pure folk-lore and have no basis, but some have more established effects. So, this week, I’m giving you guys a run down of some of these substances, my own experiences and general knowledge on the topic. Hopefully, it leads to someone having a good time :P
It must be said to start with though, if you’ve some form of sexual dysfunction, please see a doctor. This is not medical advice, and you should ask a doctor about taking any substance or supplement anyway!
Okay, its time again for some more drug and science news. First up, Britain’s leading drug expert, Professor Roger Pertwee says: “a system that legalizes cannabis with very strict regulations could be the way forward”. Read about it here.
Funnily enough, Missouri is surprised its attempt to ban cannabis alternatives didn’t work, as new products were on the shelves very soon after the ban on JWH’s took effect. Of course there are thousands of cannabinoids, including many in nature, such as those founds in food, and this sort of trend is something the EACD should take note of. “It’s almost like they didn't pass a law against it at all”. Read the humorously American panicking here.
'Medical marijuana' hits the small screen in a advertisement in California. Check out the article here.
The LHC produces its first result. “Quarks are not thought to be composed of anything smaller, but if one was found in an excited state, it would show this to be wrong”. The LHC has counted out excited quarks at up to 1260 GeV, implying quarks aren’t made of anything smaller. Read it here.
That towel folding robot I mentioned earlier on? Its on general sale now, if your that lazy. It can also apparently fetch a beer for you! Read it here.
Privacy group sues to get data about NSA-Google ties.
Gestural hand-tracking interface being developed by MIT researchers (w/ video). Now this sounds like a damn cool development for you game heads out there. I’m looking forward to the first console controller based on this. Check it here.
Shake off the blues: Supplementing for depression
Written by Drael
Continuing my theme of therapeutic supplements, this week I thought I'd cover depression. Depression is a common problem, and there are a host of supplements and herbs you can take, for mild to moderate depression, either if your finding pharmaceuticals aren't working, or your problem is of a milder nature, these options are ideal. Depression can be a serious illness though, so if its more than mild depression, you should consult a doctor, or ideally a psychiatrist. There are also a host of non-drug things that can help, and ill go through those too.
Now, alot of people have various forms of anxiety, and sometimes people self-treat this with drugs. In addition, sometimes anxiety can be associated with use of stimulants and psychedelics, so I thought it would be highly useful to make a guide to various herbs and supplements for anxiety. Whether you’ve ongoing problems, or simply want something around for occasional releif of stress and tension, there are some okay options available.
