Common mushrooms that look like magic mushrooms [DANGER DANGER DO NOT EAT THESE]
Hi, I would like to know what are some common mushrooms that are mistake for magic mushrooms. I've spotted a few in the dark brown bark ( not the light one that magic commonly grows in ) that look almost exactly like p.subs cept the cap is redish and they dont bruise blue

Leratiomyces Ceres
Not exactly a look-a-like but worth mentioning as new hunters do get them confused, and they also grow in the same environment as P. Subaeruginosa, and often one place will have both species, so if you see these, have a thorough look around.
Galerina marginata
This ones deadly. There are also a few other Galerina species in NZ to look out for. If you ingest these, you will get sick within 24-48 hours, then recover and feel fine. Then your liver will fail and by that stage its too late to do anything.
Psathyrella Hydrophila
Psilocybe Subaeruginosa seems to be a lot tougher than these other ones, which can be very soft and brittle. They also have a distinct field mushroom smell, take note of the smell the first time you find them. If you're unsure, take a spore print, Subs should have a purple-brown print.Last edited by dubsideofthemoon; 03-06-2011 at 01:44 AM.

Always spot galerinas as new patches, then fucking rage cause I thought they were subs. Fuckers.

These are nothing to worry about once you've found your first couple sub patches. It's easy to confuse them if you don't know what your looking for, but once you know P. Subs (pay attention to the look, feel and smell of them) they're unmistakeable.

Galerina marginata - from a distance they look convincing. But they cap and creamy gills give it away.

Found a few mushrooms growing on the same patch as some some magic ones . They look EXACTLY like them cept the gills were kinda brown and the stem was was brown to but i thought this was just because it was dirty. I knew it was magic but did a spore print anyway and it came out brown
