Alcohol - How it effects your brain

Written by Drael

Alcohol, western society’s most popular recreational drug, is one of the most studied, and yet its exact pharmacology remains perhaps even more mysterious than that of MDMA.

Believe me when I say this, there is quite the list of potential central actions, it has an action of some sort at almost every major neurotransmitter system, so bear with me as I attempt to summarize it all!

Some major suspects

The first major suspect is the GABA-A receptors, where benzodiazepines like diazepam act. It doesn’t act here directly, but definitely acts indirectly, and in particular the delta subunit of GABA-A receptors. This contributes to the sense of relaxation and sedation.

Another major player, is the glutamate receptors, particularly the NMDA receptor, where somewhat related drugs Ketamine and PCP act. The action is responsible for disassociative effects, which may be partly responsible for unusual behaviours on large amounts of alcohol, as well as contributing to sedative effects.

Alcohol is also a potentiator of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, which may contribute to its rewarding effects, as well as the effect of alcohol on memory (same with the NMDA receptor).

Tai High Review - Taste testing the new Hawaiian Haze

Written by Drael

I got asked to do a review on the new Tai High Hawaiian haze - no need to ask there, lol! But without being told they’d changed the formulae *chuckles* ....Well, I picked it had changed, which I am quietly chuffed about, and it is indeed quite different feeling from the old formulae. A unique and well put together offering. So here were my impressions:-

Smell/Taste: Has changed since first release. Now it smells just like cooking spices, perhaps tarragon with a hint of nutmeg, subtle. Savoury and enjoyable, and not overpowering either. The new taste is pretty awesome design for the savoury side of things smoke-wise – even in a joint, it’s a mellow flavour.

Appearance: Fine but not too fine, no seeds, no real stalks, 99.9% just easy smoking leaf - very good looking medium, easy to use.

First Hit, One word, Starting with H, Noun: Headspace. (First trial with a little tobacco, to see how it goes in a mull, smoked in pipe)

Trippy in the head, slightly mellow also; in the head. At first little body effect, extremely rapid shift then to body relaxation, and mental mellowness. It’s wavy -energetic fading to calm. Some, euphoria, but other characteristics more prominent. There is a quick initial shift from trippy, to mellow, and then in sort of planes out for a much longer period, with gentle waves.

Very interesting unique qualities. Stronger than earlier release. Been ages since I’ve had any kind of canna smoke, so will need to retest…..seems more “open” to set and setting and initial mind state. Seems could be relaxing for “explorers”, or those with experience with drugs, and a little more revealing/intense for “day-trippers”, i.e. complete novices to drugs – but it’s also not a heavy weight like the old Tai High Bubble Berry, so it’s not going to blow your brain into space either. Nice middle ground really.

I had a full sense of surroundings, no confusion, but the inner emotional feelings internally are very noticeable. Fades over long period, about half an hour to an hour, subtley, to an ease and mellowness. It’s like having a light jog with your mind, that leaves you just right afterwards, fully balanced.

Overall initial reflections, after one smoked legal joint (medium/small, not a phatty): There is a reasonable level of tolerance to the trippy effects on second use as suspected, very relaxing, and yet uplifting, though again, unique. Perhaps like a little an ”uplifting” & trippy indica. No mong, but leaves you both calm and energized.

Not massively euphoric like strong indoor weed, but has more than plenty to offer of other great Cannabinoid qualities, along with a bit of that too. It’s definitely less mongy/stone-over and anxiety inducing compared with illegal weed……some major pluses and

-also –

Creativity and juices of the "thought engine" kind generally seem to be through the roof. Ideas and musical inspirations abound. This really is a pretty damn good Muso’s smoke, and philosophers “Stone”. A good one to yak with some mates about Star wars or some shit!

So, Hat’s tipped to the Tai High design team that put this together! :)

Tai High Hawaiian Haze is only available in some states of Australia, check your local laws. If it's legal in your area, you can buy it -

Many people in New Zealand will know about BZP and legal weed. But what they often don’t see is the whole bigger picture, and the history. Yes, the first two marketed legal highs were BZP, and the similarly now illegal GHB. But that is just the middle of a much longer and more complex story.

Research chemicals, a code phrase for novel and new psychoactive chemicals, have been sold online for a long time, well before they were marketed, and before the advent of BZP. These chemicals were usually discovered from medical and scientific literature, there was no development in that sense; they were coming up with the chemicals second hand.

It was the advent of openly marketed legal drugs, firstly BZP that turned the legal high industry, into an industry – a worldwide industry centred in the large European market. BZP was first marketed here, in New Zealand as an alternative to amphetamines and MDMA – it wasn’t long before they were marketed the same in Europe.

Europe

But Europe’s initially different drug laws meant that a wide variety of other chemicals were legal. Among these is the now famous mephedrone (and a host of others like methylone & butylone). Locally, these slowly replaced BZP as the legal active ingredient of choice, first with locally sold and marketed methylone and butylone pills. It was a shady company in Israel that brought mephedrone into the equation, as it was also legal there (and MDMA and raves are popular there as well). Once the European and worldwide legal highs companies caught on, it was increasingly mephedrone in the legal pills.

Okay, I’m sure these three drugs have _some_ fans. Strange, insane and dark fans. But my advice, and experience is to stay the heck away from them. I’ll share my experience of each of them in turn.

Absinthe, The Green Fairy (la fée verte)

Written by Drael

Absinthe is a very strong, green colored distilled liquor, made from wormwood, anise, fennel and other herbs. It’s unique because the wormwood provides some “added” effects, via a chemical called Thujone, and very cool because of the ritual of drinking it, and its “bad boy” history with Bohemian artists, writers, poets and such (The likes of Hemmingway, Van Gogh, and Crowley). To drink it properly, there are two little rituals, the French method, and the Bohemian method.

The French Method is as follows: You put the Absinthe into a glass. You put a spoon, with holes or slots, on top of the glass, and put a sugar cube in it. Then you pour chilled water over the spoon (ordinary temperature still works) - until its fairly diluted with the water. With a true Absinthe, this will turn the drink cloudy, which is essentially some of the flavors precipitating out - making it nicer to drink. These are the other herbs, so if a liquor is made from wormwood only, or not made properly, this process doesn’t do anything at all, and it won’t turn cloudy.

A look at the past of legals

Written by Drael

I thought it’d be very fitting for the kick off of the newly resurrected TripMe blogs to start with a bit of a trip down the memory lane of legal highs....

It all started with the explosion of the net. Before then, commercial legal highs mostly consisted of  a bunch of completely stupid herbs, and, a lot of people still think that’s what legal highs still are. You may remember the sadness that was herbal ecstasy, or the early “buds” sold in magazines.

But, thankfully, the internet gave birth to the two major long players in the legal high scene, those selling plants (ethnobotanicals), and chemicals (research chemicals) over the net, both on the down low.

For those that remember, that was an interesting time. There was a host of psychedelics available, foxy, the 2C’s and DMT analogues. Of course,  there were some busts because some of the chemicals broke analogue laws, and the others were all eventually banned, but before then people enjoyed some very mind-blowing hallucinogens.

After all that, two new legals started being sold, at about the same time as each other, both in the same internet order style as the other chemicals. One was GHB, which was sold sometimes as a tape head cleaner but was also marketed as an anti-depressant and bodybuilding aid. GHB spread fast and was eventually banned.  I partook in this substance many times back then, and it was very nice....... except for the passing out bit. Check out this picture its funny as....

The other was BZP, first nicknamed “A2”, which initially like all the other internet chemicals, was sold as a mysterious powder in an unmarked baggie. That’s a bit of a joke, really, because you’d think that’d be a little bit suspicious to authorities.

And then, out of the blue, Matt Bowden, turned the whole thing on its head, selling BZP instead in capsules and packets, via actual stores, with strong harm minimization marketing.

It was very bold, and eventually, here in little old New Zealand, the humble stimulant BZP was being sold in corner stores, openly marketed and reaching around 2 million pills consumed a year at the peak - a mainstream and popular product.

Those days will be remembered by many forever. The straight BZP pills, the trippier TFMPP pills. Great for energy and for dancing at dance parties and festivals. And you’ll remember equally the horrible hangovers of course too.

And I also recall fondly great nights dancing hard on the pills, loving the music, talking utter crap to random strangers and staring deeply at the lights and fire dancers like a stunned hedgehog. And the great Funk Pills stuff. I tried Escapes just before the ban, at Phat, and the sound felt like it was hitting me in euphoric waves. For a few hours I could barely string a sentence together. That was an excellent pill! I’m sure many people also have strong memories of those early BZP times. What are yours?

All those events, changed the legals scene forever, leading to a huge worldwide industry dedicated to making you nicely high. And thank God for that.
